About Qnnect

How do complex quantum systems behave when many particles interact with each other over long distances?
This question lies at the heart of Qnnect, a Special Research Program (SFB) funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF).
We study quantum systems built from neutral atoms, cooled to temperatures near absolute zero and controlled with extraordinary precision using laser light. Recent breakthroughs make it possible to engineer strong, long-range interactions between these atoms, creating highly connected quantum systems whose collective behavior goes far beyond that of their individual building blocks.

Our consortium brings together four experimental and four theory groups across Austria and Germany.
Together, we explore four complementary platforms: magnetic dysprosium atoms, ultracold polar molecules, atoms coupled through optical resonators, and arrays of Rydberg atoms.
By sharing ideas, methods, and technology across these systems, we aim to expand the reach of quantum simulation, improve the performance of quantum processors, and explore new regimes of quantum optics.

Qnnect is coordinated at TU Wien, with partner institutions at the University of Vienna, the University of Innsbruck, the Austrian Academy of Sciences - ISTA, and the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich.
