2. Qnnect Seminar

Daniel Schneider Grün on Erbium Tweezer Arrays

April 30, 2026

The Bernien group hosted a Qnnect seminar with Daniel Schneider Grün from the Ferlaino group (University of Innsbruck) in the Schrödinger Saal at IQOQI.

In his talk, „Optical tweezer arrays of erbium atoms for quantum simulation“, Daniel presented recent progress in building a quantum simulation platform based on erbium — an element with a far richer internal structure than the atoms typically used in such experiments. The team achieved single-atom trapping in optical tweezers and demonstrated, for the first time, coherent control of Rydberg states of erbium. Daniel also showed how erbium’s wealth of optical transitions opens up new possibilities for trapping, controlling, and characterizing these systems, paving the way for a new generation of lanthanide-based quantum architectures.

Thanks to Daniel for the great talk and to everyone who joined the discussion!
